Program Curriculum

Month 1: Your professional baseline

We will spend the first month getting to know each other and ourselves.  In a field where we are usually expected to practice independently and without oversight, developing self-awareness is a key skill to continuing to grow as a BCBA.  We will go through your vision and values and professional identity to better understand who you are as a BCBA, and where you are looking to grow.  During this month, we will read articles about self-care & boundary settings; reflect on our experiences thus far as BCBAs, and use multiple tools to get a sense of our baseline skillsets.  The goal of the first month is to cultivate a safe space for everyone to challenge themselves and grow over the remaining time together.

Month 2: Case programming

Our first month of clinical work will focus on treatment planning, goal writing, program development and visual analysis.  Using a current client on your caseload, we will go through redesigning the treatment plan to focus on the high priority skills your clients need to learn.  We will also have opportunities to share graphs and collaborate with each other in real time to troubleshoot stalled progress or skill deficits.  This month is an opportunity to learn efficient systems to manage client programming confidently without overextending yourself.

Month 3: Staff training

ABA graduate programs are now required to provide a course in supervision, which is a huge step in the right direction.  Unfortunately, many new BCBAs are left unsure of how to apply burdensome training techniques when they are pressed for time, their RBTs are extremely green, or there are high rates of turnover (to name a few barriers!)  This month, we will focus on how to train your team in a respectful, collaborative way that supports client progress.  Assignments will include relevant readings, training opportunities and troubleshooting current staffing issues you may be experiencing.

Month 4: Caregiver support

Parent training is a required part of insurance-funded ABA therapy, and can play a pivotal role in a client's care and progress.  It's also seldom taught in graduate school, and then suddenly, as an independent BCBA, you are expected to know what to do!  This month we will tackle how to ensure parents are equal and meaningful team members while also creating our own boundaries.  We will utilize resources to understand the parent perspective, discuss ethical concerns that crop up when working with families, and learn how to use systems to streamline caregiver training.

Month 5: Time & systems management

We need to put it all together!  Being a BCBA means wearing many hats, and being able to manage the client, the team and the family all at once seamlessly.  After several months of going through each component individually, we will delve into systems management.  We will learn how to prioritize issues across caseloads; communication skills necessary for working with teams; red flags that you should not ignore; and revisit our boundaries with all this new knowledge in mind.

After month 5, there will be an option to extend for FBAs/BIPs and Multidisciplinary Collaboration. More information will be provided in month 3 for those currently enrolled.
