  • FAQ | Nicole L. Stewart

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions For Parents For Professionals For Parents & Prospective Clients What is a BCBA? A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. To become a BCBA, one must hold a masters in a related field, take advanced coursework in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and complete supervised fieldwork. I have been a BCBA since 2012 and in the field of special education and ABA since 2005. What is ABA? ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA is the science of behavior, and using behavioral change techniques to teach desired behaviors and lessen interfering behaviors. The primary techniques that drive my practice include relationship development, positive reinforcement, analysis of objective data, natural environment teaching, task analysis, chaining and breaking skills down into smaller steps. You may have heard of discrete trial training (DTT) associated with ABA: that is only 1 technique of ABA and not one that I typically use. I also ensure all objectives are applied and appropriate for the child, which means making sure they are neurodiversity affirming, and not "cookie-cutter ABA". Are you accepting new clients? Currently, I am accepting new clients. Due to the individual needs of each client, we can discuss whether our schedules and needs align prior to onboarding. What type of payment do you accept? All of my services are billed as private pay. I am not in-network with any insurance company. If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement for my 1:1 behavioral therapy or parent coaching services. As a disclaimer, most insurance companies do not provide coverage (in or out of network) for a BCBA unless the child has an autism diagnosis. However, I have been able to get exceptions and will work with you to try to secure medically necessary coverage. In these instances, a diagnosis is usually necessary as well as support from your child's pediatrician and/or a neuropsychologist. Additionally, for IEEs, payment would happen through your school district. In addition to IEEs, I have been contracted through school districts to provide 1:1 therapy or other services through the impartial hearing process. What type of needs do you serve? I work with children with autism, ADHD, anxiety, ODD, rare genetic disorders and multiple diagnoses as well as children who do not have a diagnosis. While the diagnosis can play a clue into the underlying mechanisms behind strengths, deficits, behaviors and overall needs, my practice focuses more on the individual child and program. What ages do you work with? I specialize in early childhood and elementary school. I have worked with middle and high school children, typically those who have more severe or intensive needs. Most of my clients are between 2-10 years old. What is the difference between you and other therapists? My therapy is rooted in strengths-based skill building, self-acceptance and preservation of self-esteem. My practice breaks skills down in fun and functional ways to teach them and promote generalization. Across all my services, I work collaboratively with you to ensure progress and success. My goal is that you and your child do not need my services forever: I want to empower and educate you and your child's team to maximize their success. How do I know if it's a good match? Trust your gut. For 1:1 therapy, your child should be excited to see me, or at the very least, not afraid of me or our work together. Some kids avoid hard work, which means they may not love our sessions, and it's important for us to work together to identify any reservations. For parent coaching, if it's not a match, that is okay! I will refer you to other providers, and most of my services are billed hourly, which means there is no obligation to continue. Finding the right rapport is part of the therapeutic relationship, and while I am flexible to meet the needs of many families, it is also okay if we are not the right match. What do your sessions look like? For 1:1 therapy, my sessions often look like play. We might build obstacle courses, do word searches, conduct science experiments, play board games or even play catch. I use an eclectic mix of resources, and embed my teaching into fun activities. I might use the same activity for all of my sessions in a week, and it looks completely different from child to child based on their personality and goals. For parent coaching, we can do in-person or via Zoom. I like to include write-ups or visuals to support communication and collaboration. I also will provide models (often with my own children if needed!) or train you directly on a skill. Let's Connect Explore Services For BCBAs and Other Professionals What kind of CEUs do you offer for BCBAs? I’m always curating CEUs that reflect the real challenges BCBAs face today—especially in areas like ADHD, supervision, collaboration, and professional ethics. I work with BCBAs launching private practices or reimagining existing businesses so they are clinically sound and sustainable. In addition to 1:1 mentorship, I have a 14-CEU library available for purchase to jumpstart your independent business. What does your staff training and supervision support look like? Through Supervision Reimagined , we help ABA companies build strong training systems and supervision frameworks that align with the BACB Test Content Outline 6.0, The RBT Test Content Outline 3.0, The BACB Professional & Ethics Code and the Supervision Curriculum. Services range from providing key insights and action items to full implementation of onboarding and RBT training. We offer a range of options to suit businesses large and small. Can I hire you to present at my agency or event? Yes! I've presented on ADHD, supervision, neurodiversity affirming ABA, emotional regulation, multi-disciplinary collaboration, goal development, executive functioning and more! I can adapt materials to suit your CEU requirements, create parent-facing content or facilitate team trainings. Contact me to talk about what would be most impactful for your group. Do you provide training to non-ABA professionals? Of course! My goal is to make ABA more accessible to everyone, which means supporting spaces outside of the ABA world. I have provided training events for camp counselors, daycare professionals, preschool teachers and more. These events typically focus on topics such as: diagnoses, accommodations, setting children up for success, responding to behaviors, and communicating effectively with families. There is a high focus on creating systems that work for the environment, and giving staff the tools they need to succeed. Let's chat to find a training that's right for your team! • Solo Practice Mentorship | Nicole L. Stewart

Dream of being your own boss? Want to start a private ABA practice but don't know how? Enroll in this 12-hour class that comes with tons of resources and supports to inspire and empower you as a business owner. ABA Private Practice Mentorship Empowering and equipping you with the tools you need to reinvent your professional life Are you ready to enter the world of private practice? Are you burnt out of a tiered model of services filled with turnover, stress and high volume, low quality caseloads? Do you dream of other career paths and jobs that don't feel so draining? Did you go into ABA to have a meaningful impact in the lives of children and their families? I was in the same place as you were a few years ago - I even thought about law school instead of behavior analysis! That's how you know I was completely drained. Instead, I re-examined my options with my current credentials, and have developed a thriving private practice. 81.84% of BCBAs specialize in autism (BACB, 2024). But we all know that the principles of behavior are everywhere and can be applied to any population. Autism treatment continues to be a necessary component of our field, but is not the only area of specialty. Unfortunately, we have created a cycle that has narrowed our scope: we typically train with the autism population, which generates a need for funding, which generates research to support efficacy. Together, we can expand the scope of practice. My goal for this course is to train others to replicate my model. By increasing the number of providers who are competent in other practice areas, we increase the need for funding and research. We can change this cycle. What's even more, you can be a part of the change while also increasing your job satisfaction, flexibility and quite possibly your income! But wait, what is my practice model? I provide direct therapy in "low doses" to children who benefit from ABA. "Low doses" = 1-2 times per week for 45 minutes - 1 hour "Children who benefit from ABA" = could be any child, but is typically a child with a diagnosis such as ADHD or anxiety, and who is struggling with emotional regulation, social skills and/or executive functioning These are children who require additional opportunities to build skills and neural pathways towards socially significant behaviors that address the challenges that they are experiencing. This may feel familiar to related services, such as OT, SLP and counseling, but focuses on behavioral change and habit building. AKA, skills that we as behavior analysts are uniquely qualified to focus on and teach. In addition, my model, like traditional ABA treatment, focuses on parent collaboration and support. Every session has a parent communication component. Strategies are given to empower parents with tools to improve home life and to better meet their child's needs. The parent, as an equal partner, also provides critical feedback on the generalization of skills taught during therapy sessions. I have learned that there is a huge gap in services for children with emotional and behavioral needs. Parents go from OT to SLP to MSW in search of someone who understands their child, their family needs, and can give everyone replacement behaviors to improve overall functioning and dynamics. While other clinicians are also qualified, they are few and far between. Too many families are left struggling, and too many children do not have adequate support. Are you ready to make a change? Program Curri cu lum Part 1: Yo ur Niche You'll gain a greater understanding of who you are as a BCBA and who you want to be as a solopreneur. You'll find inspiration in your strengths, identify what you don't know, and align your value with the needs of your community. Think of this as an initial assessment to understand your baseline: your skills, your deficits, your history and where you could fit into your community. Descriptive assessments, interviews and questionnaires give you more data to better develop your mission. This part is necessary to understanding who you are, where you want to grow and to create a clear vision for your professional goals. Part 2: Your Business Plan We will focus on business logistics. You will be given resources to determine how to create your own business plan that matches your mission and goals. We will review different funding sources and options to determine your business model. We will also discuss financial planning: know your options for benefits, retirement savings, invoices and more. In order to maintain ethical clinical standards, you also need to be running an ethical business, and feel equipped to practice as a business owner. Principles of Organizational Behavior Management will be threaded throughout to ensure your business practices align with behavior analytic principles. Part Three: Your Ethical Principles Prepare yourself for the ethical dilemmas you may face as a solopreneur. As BCBAs, we often rely on our peers to troubleshoot sticky areas. How can you grow your skillset and maintain a sense of belonging that helps you navigate challenging moments? This section includes proactive tools such as contracts, creating business management strategies, and recognizing triggers that occur for you. Part Four: Your Network During this portion, we focus on how to market yourself and establish a network. You will be empowered to develop a network, support your community and think outside the box to develop your practice. There are several types of networking, that we will review and discuss when to focus on each form. In addition, we will cover social media, websites, marketing strategies, and networking strategies. It is important to think about every component of your business through a behavior analytic lens: how are you networking ethically? What do you need in a network to ethically support your clients? Additionally, how do you know if your networking and marketing is effective? How do you test marketing interventions and measure success? Part Five: Your Clinical Staples The focus of part five is knowing what you need clinically before you need it. We discuss essential clinical must-haves for being a solo BCBA. Key areas of focus include: developing templates; setting your schedule; and management of materials and data. Be prepared for new clients and minimize clinical hiccups with a comprehensive set-up. Part Six: Your Business Management As this course comes to a close, we discuss some tips to manage your finances and flow of work as well as develop KPIs around your business development. 1 day, 7.5 CEUs, jam-packed with information focused on treating ADHD using behavior analytic principles. Ideal for BCBAs, great for parents and other professionals. August 16, 2023 9:30 am - 4:45 pm EDT ABA and ADHD 1 day, 7.5 CEUs, jam-packed with information focused on treating ADHD using behavior analytic principles. Ideal for BCBAs, great for parents and other professionals. August 16, 2023 9:30 am - 4:45 pm EDT Unlock potential through skill-building Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts approximately 6-16% of children (CDC.gov, 2023). Children with ADHD often experience challenges with emotional regulation, social skills, executive functioning and self-management, among other areas of functioning. These difficulties can lead to low self-esteem, increased conflict and poor educational outcomes (Kuriyan et. al., 2013). FBAs and BIPs completed by BCBAs have become increasingly more common for children with ADHD in school settings (Rapp et. al., 2020). Additionally, treatment recommendations from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics include behavioral therapy. However, ABA therapy is not widely practiced as a way to develop functional skills and bolster areas of deficits within this population. Further, parents of children with ADHD often report frustration with the lack of appropriate therapeutic option s available to adequately address performance deficits. With more training and support, BCBAs could be an optimal choice as practitioners. This training supports the development of BCBAs interested in treating the ADHD population. Participants will learn specific teaching strategies, assessment techniques and programming to effectively hone the abilities of children with ADHD.
